In 1309, Pope Clement V moved to Avignon and created a “New Castle for the Pope,” which became the center of Catholicism, and fantastic wine! Though the Papacy left in 1377, fine wine production continues: Châteauneuf is the most important cru in the southern Rhône. Slightly lighter than other wines from the area, the Beauchene is beautifully textured with concentrated spiced red fruit that balances its considerable alcohol; and just enough syrah to add a gamey savory quality. Enjoy with tenderloin or Thanksgiving.
