South of St. Emilion on the right bank, Castillon lays claim to the same sort of sandy-clay-limestone soils that make this one Bordeaux’s most popular and prolific areas. By balancing a true sense of terroir while gently applying a talented wine maker’s hand, Roque Le Mayne has a seductive nose of dark red fruit, vanilla (this wine spent a year in 25% new oak), and deep notes of chocolate; the palate is rich with excellent tannins and a full flavor. Pair this with lamb of course, but perhaps a hearty duck breast preparation as well.
