Abruzzo is a somewhat isolated region. The Apennine Mountains form a western barrier cutting it off from Lazio and Rome, thereby capturing the wind and warmer climate off the coast of the Adriatic Sea. This makes for excellent viticultural conditions—and the ideal place to grow the grape montepulciano. Rustic and solidly built, with medium texture and good, thick fruit flavors of sour cherry, berry, and spice; it’s perfect for succulent dishes with red sauce, roast meats, & semi-aged cheeses.
